New Theme Part 2

Okay, after working on it for a while, turns out the other theme just wasn’t my thing. So, I’ve changed it yet again! Get used to this, folks. This place is going to be a work in progress until I’m cold and dead in the ground. I do like this theme more, though, so who knows how long I’ll stick with it?

Updates: sent in the last information to the publisher aside from cover art approval, so we’re getting nearer and nearer the end and publication. The book is more than 500 pages, so be prepared for a hefty cover price on paperback and hardback copies, though. If you elect to go with an ebook as a result I will understand completely. Bear in mind, though, that I can’t sign those without destroying your phone or tablet. Apologies.

New Theme

Trying out a different theme. I kind of liked the other one at first, but the more I worked with it the more it annoyed me. So, trying something else. This one is a little more straightforward, but it comes with its own set of problems as I now need to learn how to edit things in it that weren’t in the old format. For example, there’s that header bar. That stupid, cluttered header bar. Die, header bar. Die.

Next up on my agenda is artwork. I have a horde of artwork courtesy of the wonderful Kathy Nutt, and it will begin to find a home right here.

Progress… sort of

All right, not much of an update, but here we go. Final version of the manuscript has been sent to the publisher and things are now out of my hands. I’ll post when I hear something new.

I’m also trying to figure out precisely what I want to post about on here. Just writing about writing seems like it would bore anyone — particularly me — to tears, so I’m thinking I’ll also post about the hobbies that I love: books, movies, and board games. I’m even contemplating doing story-like write-ups of the various games I play because I’m weird and wish to inflict my weirdness upon anyone unfortunate enough to cross its path. Take that.

Meanwhile, trying to figure out this whole website creation thing. Doing slightly better, which means I’m probably up to the level of a modern three-year-old. Go me.

On Marketing

I would say this feels like deja vu, but it’s been so long since I tried making a website that I can’t even vaguely recall what it felt like. I do remember I didn’t do it very well. At least that aspect feels the same.

Okay, enough with the self pity and time for the self flagellation. I have done a piss-poor job promoting myself since publishing my first book more than a decade ago. What can I say? I’m a horrible salesman. Absolutely horrible. My friend, Rocky, once answered my desperate, “Am I that bad a salesman?” query with the honest and devastating, “John, you could talk anyone out of buying your book.” The problem is that while I know how to write (sort of), I don’t have a freaking clue how to market. No idea. My fellow author, Shane Moore, could probably make a fortune selling packets of sand in Saudi Arabia, but I couldn’t get a man dying of thirst to take a glass of water off my hands free of charge.

So, I need to get over this. Rather than lamenting how bad I am at this, I need to get better, and I’m going to start by putting this bloody website together. It feels about as daunting as taking a stab at throwing together a life-size replica of the Great Pyramids of Egypt, but I’m going to do it, anyway. You, dear reader, will be my companion on this journey. So, watch for updates, watch for info, watch for rantings and ravings. More to come.
