Faranin

I do apologize for the resolution of the map. The one in the book is much higher quality ;-). The lovely map is courtesy of the very talented Mary Katherine Nutt, whose credit, unfortunately, does not appear in the novel itself.

NameFoundedRulerProvinceDescription
Balashad1Governor KastabalKreoneFaranin's founding city is the cultural nerve center of the kingdom. A haven for artists and craftsmen, it is also a military stonghold with defensive walls and a full army at the governor's command. While technically a part of Kreone province, Terne exercises a great deal of control here.
Hirum821Chairman OgelasKreoneA perfect example of life along the Karees River, where fishermen and unsavory types thrive and all others are advised to watch their pouches and their backs.
Istiri643Governor JexusKreoneChief competitor to Lias in the fish trade, Istiri benefits from close proximity to Uremshir, whose primarily merphite population love fish above all else.
Kreone117Lord CoresheumKreoneCastle Kreone, around which the city is built, is the largest structure on Faranin apart from the palace of Terne. The city is strong, proud, and almost constantly at war with its neighbors. While Kreone does possess a strong military, it is close enough to Balashad to have taken on some of the fair city's artistic traits.
Lias600Governor PyelumKreoneOne of the more prominent fishing communities in the kingdom, Lias benefits from a direct route to Balashad and the northern trade routes. Despite being a large city, it is quite weak in terms of military defenses.
Pora487Lord PelienKreoneSurrounded by small rivers and woodlands, Pora is considered something of a haven. Its soil is ripe for farming, and its waters contain plenty of fish. It even houses a garrison made up primarily of people from the area.
Foram269Governor SethiaLoratAlmost completely cut off from the rest of the kingdom, the city of Foram is highly independent. Its people consider themselves citizens of Faranin in name only, and provide a councilman only because they must.
Korinth668Chairman CellethenLoratA small town near Lorat that had the fortune of seeing the birth of one of the greatest warriors in Faranin's history -- Wilfrem Eresgot. Korinth has since enjoyed some fame in its own region, but remains unknown to most of the continent.
Lorat73Lord HistamuLoratOldest of the capital cities, Lorat was also the last to be taken when the armies of Terne conquered their neighbors. A well defended city, it is also the most reclusive and seeks little contact with the other provinces.
Warst235Lady PhelyssLoratThe second largest city in Lorat is home to what are considered the finest rangers and woodsmen in all the lands. The city is partially constructed inside the benign Jolum Forest.
Winn301Governor MaxillenLoratA fair-sized city and home to a large number of derite, Winn houses most of Lorat's military and is the only city in Faranin with multiple commanders. It acts as a staging point for all military operations in the province.
Creas614Chairman ApethardRoeA small mountain community threatened by expanding mining operations along the Asregarde Mountains. Creas is close to Roe and well protected by her from armed foes, but political foes are another matter.
Duran498Lord ThendrasRoeThe largest city in Roe province besides the capital itself, Duran is one of the primary training grounds for Roe's military. The harsh climate and tough living conditions breed strong warriors who are the envy of the kingdom.
Kayon710Lady HevethaRoeThe furthest east of the major cities, Kayon is a large port town at the mouth of the Karees. While under the rule of Roe, it is closest with its neighbors on Kerator Island to the east of Faranin.
Roe101Lord NeriumRoeThe militaristic city is home to some of the strongest warriors in all the lands, but it is hardly a cultural haven. Ugly and sturdy, the city has been tempered by close proximity to the northlands and beating back repeated raids by the barbarian hordes.
Baren362Lady ElathiaSegovaThe largest town in Segova, which is made up primarily of small, mobile communities. Baren is heavily defended and contains multiple cavalry divisions. The town is built near one of the few sources of water in southeast Faranin.
DebrastPre-BalashadGothtrog the FierceSegovaHome of the ror'teg people, Debrast is a massive series of caves that the hearty hairy men have built over the centuries. They are considered part of Segova, though the rest of Faranin has very little control over the city.
Segova211Lady XeneliSegovaFounded near one of the only sources of water in all the south, Segova is something of an oasis in a vast desert. Extremely difficult to attack, it held out against the superior forces of Terne for many years. Since then the two provinces have become fast, respectful friends.
Driam786Chairman PonelusTerneOne of the larger fishing villages by Lake Oberon, it also features a fair amount of viable farmland. Many who wish to avoid work in the mines seek out towns such as Driam
Juran356Governor VellenTerneLargest of the fishing towns on Lake Oberon, Juran is widely known as a festive town with rather loose laws/morals. Despite its size it has no army of its own due to its proximity to the northern outpost.
Tarloni473Governor VirtilTerneBuried in the Kiari wood, Tarloni is still a thriving community thanks to many travelers taking a direct route from Lorat to Terne and passing through the town. Rangers and hunters make their home there, though trade with farmers from Terne is common.
Terne89King AretlanTerneThe crown jewel of Faranin and the mightiest city in all the lands. Terne is widely considered unbeatable, and its might stretches out beyond even the continent of Faranin. Inimitably defendable, Terne has never fallen to a siege, and its walls have never once been breached in almost eight hundred years.
Tristan807Chairman SykesTerneA tiny community of outcasts, thieves, and pirates. Tristan, like many towns on the Karees, survives entirely off trade along the deadly river.
Uremshir65Governor FexesTerneThe second oldest city on Faranin, Uremshir is home to the majority of the continent's merphite population. The city had long struggled for independence and its own province, and was a focal point of many of the continent's wars. However, it remains a servant of Terne
Fort Herioch812Captain KilgerTerneBuilt by the rulers of Kreone as a means of watching over the northlands, Fort Herioch has been all but forgotten. As it is near the shady northern towns, it has also gained a populace of disreputable types. Even the soldiers of the garrison have become lax and immoral.

Kiari Wood   The largest forest on Faranin serves as home to all manner of woodland creatures, including a large number of elves. Rangers and woodsmen make their homes here, and the forest acts as a natural barrier for attacks against Terne.
Fotum Mountains   The snow-covered mountains of the southlands appear in sharp contradiction to the rest of the area. Deserts surround the frosty peaks, atop which dwell not only the ror'teg, but various bizarre and deadly creatures.
Gulf of Esteria   Lined with numerous port towns, the gulf is the center of trade with other continents thanks to the gentle waters and lack of dangerous creatures or pirates. The Isle of Melphis lies just outside the gulf and is home to some of the finest sailors in the world.
Lake Dalamar   Despite being fed by the Karees River, Lake Dalamar is actually quite safe and devoid of dangerous creatures. It is also loaded with fish and is the primary source of income for many towns along its shores, including Uremshir.
Lake Norde   The only lake in all the southlands is massive, and all the peoples of Segova Province depend on it for survival. The rivers flowing from it also provide defense for Segova itself.
Lake Oberon   The largest lake in the east, it provides most of the fish for both Terne and Roe. However, it is so close to the Karees that many of its towns have fallen under the sway of the area's questionable morality.
Asregarde Mountains   Center of mining for the whole continent, the Asregarde are not nearly as treacherous as the Fotum. They provide all the minerals Terne needs, but the mines are notoriously unsafe, and the miners face the distinct possibility of death every day.
Karees River   The deadly river that chops the continent in two is miles across and leagues deep -- home to some of the strangest and most dangerous creatures in all the world. It is also an outstanding trade route, and many use it despite the obvious risks.
Jungles of the North   Uncharted, unexplored, and more than merely unsafe. The barbarian tribes were driven across the Karees and now make their homes in the depths of the jungles along with ogres, trolls, and dozens of other horrific creatures.
Kragg Mountains   Faranin's largest mountain range is almost entirely uncharted. It is known to contain valuable riches, but few dare try mine them.
Sea of Sorrows   No sailor worth his salt enters here, as it is home to dozens of pirate clans and some of the most treacherous waters to be found.
Lake Errtemak   The largest lake on Faranin is just as dangerous as the river that runs through it. Strong winds do help larger ships pass through as they make their way up and down the Karees, but one is very nearly as likely to be swallowed whole as to traverse its waters.
Western Plains   Vast fields of farmlands that were once home to marauding tribes of barbarians. They are now covered by peaceful villages.
Lake Hira   Another natural barrier for Terne, Lake Hira provides a wall against invaders and fish for the town. While fish here are not as plentiful as in Lake Oberon or Lake Dalamar, they do provide yet another source of income for the wealthy city.
